Winter has descended on our cosy Resort at Crystal Springs; mornings start under a blanket of mist and the evenings bring about a chill, which chases us from the outdoor braai areas to our indoor fireplace nooks. Showers tend to be extended to warm our muscles and offer the perfect opportunity for Mbali Spa’s Uplifting Winter Shower Steamers!
Shower Steamers or shower melts are a great little pick-me-up filled with essential oils. These aromas are released into the steam, creating an invigorating experience. Our recipe calls for Eucalyptus and Peppermint oils, perfect for relieving muscle aches and sinus problems.
INGREDIENTS
1 Cup Bicarbonate of Soda
1/2 Cup Maizena
1/2 Cup Epsom Salts
3 Tbsp. Coconut Oil, melted
10 Drops of Peppermint and/or Eucalyptus Essential Oils
VARIATIONS
- Shower Steamers make a wonderful gift; add some colour to them and package a few for someone special.
- A wide variety of essential oils are available, each with unique benefits and aromatics; Lavender Oil for calming or relaxing, Orange or Cinnamon oil to boost brain function and moisturise dry skin and there are many others to consider.
- Try using a silicone mould to easily pop the steamers out once they have set.
METHOD
Place the dry ingredients into a bowl and slowly start to dribble melted coconut oil and essential oils into the mixture, in small doses. Add more bicarbonate of soda if the mixture seems too runny; the mixture should be damp not soaked.
Once stirred, and to your preference, spoon into a mould. The mix should be packed into the mould as tightly as possible so there are no air pockets. Leave the mould in a dry area for approximately 24 hours to thoroughly dry out.
The Uplifting Winter Shower Steamers are ready when they are easily removed from the mould. Store in an airtight container and enjoy the lovely aroma of a dissolving steamer in your next shower! Simply place the Steamer in the corner of your shower and allow to dissolve while showering.
